Surrey Groups

Groups allow families and their children the opportunity to achieve therapy goals in a natural environment while interacting with people with similar needs. The center has several exciting group programs, which are listed below.

Our current groups are:

Bouncy Babies: A program where parents of deaf and hard of hearing babies join together with others to share experiences and form a foundation of good communication with their children

  • Who: Children from 0 to 18 months old who are deaf or hard of hearing, plus parents. 
  • Where: BC Family Hearing Resource Society
  • When: Mondays from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM

Butterfly Hands ASL Baby Group: A program where parents and their deaf or hard of hearing babies learn American Sign Language through play, rhymes and stories

  • Who: Children from 0 to 18 months old who are deaf or hard of hearing, plus parents/caregivers
  • Where: BC Family Hearing Resource Society
  • When: Wednesdays from 1:30 PM to 2:30 PM
  • What to bring: Your child and a healthy snack
  • This group is open to clients of all three Early Intervention agencies for deaf and hard of hearing children (BCFHRC, DCS and CHSC)

Lila & Pip ASL Toddler Group: Lila & Pip stands for Literacy through Language Parent-Infant Program. A pip is another word for a seed. Lila & Pip is about using sign language to plant the seeds for early language and literacy opportunities.

  • Who: Children 18 to 36 months of age who are deaf or hard of hearing, plus parents/caregivers
  • Where: BC Family Hearing Resource Centre
  • When: Mondays from 9:30 to 11 AM
  • What to bring: Your child and a healthy snack
  • This group is open to clients of all three Early Intervention agencies for deaf and hard of hearing children (BCFHRC, DCS and CHSC)

Partners and Playmates (PNP): A program designed for toddlers who are deaf or hard-of-hearing and their parents

  • Who: Children 18 to 36 months old who are deaf or hard of hearing, plus parents/caregivers
  • Where: BC Family Hearing Resource Centre
  • When: Times are different depending on which group your child is in
    • Junior Class (18 to 24 months) - Currently not running
    • Senior Class (24 to 36 months) Tuesdays from 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM
  • What to bring: Your child, a healthy snack to share, and a water bottle
  • This group is open to clients of all three Early Intervention agencies for deaf and hard of hearing children (BCFHRC, DCS and CHSC)

Parents and Language Stimulation (PALS): A program designed for children who are deaf or hard of hearing to help form a foundation before transitioning to preschool and/or Kindergarten, set in an acoustically appropriate environment. Spoken language and sign language are used in tandem to support all children.

  • Who: Children 3 to 5 years old who are deaf or hard of hearing, plus parents/caregivers
  • Where: BC Family Hearing Resource Centre
  • When: Monday and Tuesday from 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM
  • What to bring: Your child, a healthy snack, a change of clothes, and a sense of humor
  • This group is open to clients of all three Early Intervention agencies for deaf and hard of hearing children (BCFHRC, DCS and CHSC)

Visual and Language Stimulation (VALS): A program where American Sign Language (ASL) communication techniques are shared, practiced and modeled while children and parents alike have the opportunity to meet in a preschool environment.

  • Who: Children 3 to 4 years old who are deaf or hard of hearing, plus parents/caregivers
  • Where: BC Family Hearing Resource Centre
  • When: Wednesday 9:30am to 11:30am
  • What to bring: Your child, a healthy snack, and a change of clothes
  • This group is open to clients of all three Early Intervention agencies for deaf and hard of hearing children (BCFHRC, DCS and CHSC)

PEER Group: A program designed for deaf and hard of hearing preschoolers transitioning to Kindergarten

  • Why: To help form strategies for deaf/hard of hearing children to overcome communication challenges in regular settings.
  • Who: Deaf or hard of hearing children transitioning to Kindergarten, plus parents/caregivers
  • Where: BC Family Hearing Resource Centre
  • When: Wednesdays from 7-8:30 PM, from October 12th to March 8th. Ends with a 3-day session from April 27th to 29th, 9:30 AM to 3:00 PM.
  • This program is free for eligible BCFHRC families. Eligible families that are clients of DCS and CHSC are able to attend for an additional fee.

Sign Language (Deaf and Hard of Hearing Role Models): Helping families to provide a visual language environment for their young deaf or hard of hearing children, and learning about deaf and hard of hearing experiences, cultures, and values

  • Who: Parents, relatives, and friends of 0-5 year old deaf/hard of hearing children, community professionals, ECE teachers, speech language pathologists, audiologists
  • Where: BC Family Hearing Resource Centre, in your community/preschool/daycare, home visits
  • When: Sessions available upon request

Mingle & Play: Three days of fun with deaf and hard of hearing children (birth to 5 years) and their families from all across the province

  • Who: Deaf and hard of hearing children (birth to 5 years old), plus their families
  • Where: BC Family Hearing Resource Centre
