For Professionals

At BCFHRS, we believe that teamwork and collaboration between professionals are essential to ensure a family’s success in early intervention. To this end, we encourage communication and consultation with all professional team members working with our children.

Working Together

Workshops for Professionals

Each year we offer a variety of programs for our colleagues. Some occur in various locations throughout the province to increase accessibility. We also offer the opportunity to join us online for many of our workshops. We are always interested in finding out what professional development our community partners are interested in; please contact us to share your thoughts about future classes and workshops.

Consultation Services

In order to best support our colleagues we extend the following services:

  • Individual consultation, education and support to Community Service Providers (CSP’s) such as Speech-Language Pathologists, Audiologists, Infant Development Consultants, Supported Child Development Consultants, Occupational Therapists and Physical Therapists
  • Consultation to daycares and preschools to provide specific tools and education relating to the needs of children who are deaf and hard of hearing attending these programs
  • Collaboration on the creation of Individualized Family Support Plans (IFSP’s)
  • Outreach consultation to communities outside of the Lower Mainland

Research

Our Society fosters an environment that supports research endeavours, particularly those involving interdisciplinary collaboration.  Our long-term relationship with the University of British Columbia Faculty of Education’s Program in Education of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing and the Faculty of Medicine’s School of Audiology and Speech Sciences has resulted in official collaborative agreement(s) which allows us to support each other’s training and research needs. We are working closely with them as we develop projects that provide education and best practices in early intervention for infants, toddlers and preschoolers that are deaf and hard of hearing. During the past few years, there have been several steps taken to develop a strong research base at BCFHRS.

Provincial Resource Library

Housed in our Main Surrey Centre, our resource library holds hundreds of books, videos and research journals related to the topics of hearing loss/deafness and child development that are available for loan to parents and professionals throughout British Columbia. Because it is so important to develop early literacy skills in children with hearing loss/deafness, we also have hundreds of books for young children available on loan to families.

There are also three iPads available for loan to families.  These iPads are stocked with ASL stories that you can read with your child to help develop their ASL literacy.
