For parents of children who are deaf and hard-of-hearing, one of the most impactful moments in their journey can be the first time they meet another person who is deaf or hard-of-hearing. It may be an older child, a teenager or an adult, but that moment will remain with them because it provided hope for their child’s future.
At BCFHRC, we are proud to have on our staff Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Role Models. These are adults with varying degrees of hearing loss/deafness and different backgrounds, but they all share a willingness to talk about their experiences growing up and living as individuals who are deaf and hard-of-hearing. Their insight is invaluable to our families as those families navigate their own children’s paths.
Our Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Role Models also act as our resident Sign Language Consultants. They provide individual Sign Language lessons, as well as facilitate ASL groups at our Centres. In these groups, families not only learn to communicate with their children through a visual language, but also gain valuable knowledge about Deaf culture and identity.
