YOUR CHILD'S HEARING LOSS: WHAT PARENTS NEED TO KNOW
By D. Waldman & J. Roush, Ph.D., Penguin Publishing Group, New York, 2005. Although we purchased many copies of this book for our library, this book rarely sits for long on our shelves because it is so popular with families. This book was co-authored by the parent of a child with a hearing loss and by the director of a Speech and Hearing department at the University of North Carolina.

NOT DEAF ENOUGH: RAISING A CHILD WHO IS HARD OF HEARING WITH HUGS, HUMOR, AND IMAGINATION
P. Candlish, Alexander Graham Bell Association, 1996. There have been many books written about deaf children but it is often difficult to find a book that focuses on hard of hearing children. It was for this reason that the author, the mother of a hard of hearing child, wrote this excellent book.

CHOICES IN DEAFNESS: A PARENTS GUIDE Revised
S. Schwartz -Editor, Woodbine House, Rockville, MD, 1996. Choices in Deafness explains the differences between the various communication options and includes interviews with parents who describe the decisions they made.

THE SIGNING FAMILY: WHAT EVERY PARENT SHOULD KNOW ABOUT SIGN COMMUNICATION
D. Stewart & B. Luetke-Stahlman, Washington, DC, Gallaudet University Press, 1998. This book discusses American Sign Language, Signed English, Seeing Exact English, and Contact Sign and how parents can incorporate sign language into their home.

BABY TALK: HELPING YOUR HEARING IMPAIRED BABY LISTEN AND TALK
V. Kozak and B. Moog-Brooks, St. Louis, Central Institute for the Deaf, 2001 This book, written by specialists at the Central Institute for the Deaf, includes tips for parents wanting ideas for helping their child learn to talk.

WHEN YOUR CHILD IS DEAF: A GUIDE FOR PARENTS
D. Luterman, York Press, Maryland, 1991. This is a good book for parents of a newly diagnosed deaf child. David Luterman covers topics such as: coping, parenting a deaf child, hearing testing, hearing aids, and educational and communication choices.

ONE MOTHER'S STORY - RAISING DEAF CHILDREN: AN EDUCATOR BECOMES A PARENT
B. Luetke-Stahlman, Modern Signs Press Inc., Los Alamitos, California, 1996. All members of this family strive to provide an environment in which audition, speech, language, and socialization skills are developed and Deaf culture is respected.

ALANDRA'S LILACS: THE STORY OF A MOTHER AND HER DEAF DAUGHTER
T. Bowers, Washington, DC, Gallaudet University Press, 1999. This is the story of the journey of Teresa Bowers and her deaf daughter as they experienced changes in communication choices and educational settings.

LISTEN WITH THE HEART: RELATIONSHIPS AND HEARING LOSS
M. Harvey, San Diego, Dawn Sign Press, 2001. This book describes the unique challenges of living with a hearing loss. Although many of the stories are about adults, we can learn from the experiences of the individuals who grew up deaf or hard of hearing.

THE NEW LANGUAGE OF TOYS: TEACHING COMMUNICATION SKILLS TO CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL NEEDS: A GUIDE FOR PARENTS AND TEACHERS
S. Schwartz, & J.E.H. Miller, Bethesda, Woodbine, 1996. This is a guide for parents of ways to use toys and everyday household items to help promote communication development in children.

BEYOND BABY TALK: FROM SOUNDS TO SENTENCES, A PARENT'S COMPLETE GUIDE TO LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT
K. Apel & J. Masterson, American Speech and Hearing Association, 2001. This book published by the American Speech and Hearing Association provides current information about effective ways parents can encourage speech and language development.

KID-FRIENDLY PARENTING WITH DEAF AND HARD OF HEARING CHILDREN
D. Medwid & D.C. Weston, Gallaudet Press, Washington, DC. 1996. This book addresses many issues that concern parents such as managing behaviour, how to set limits, helping children develop social skills, and dealing with school problems.

THE SILENT GARDEN: RAISING YOUR DEAF CHILD
P. Ogden, Gallaudet University Press, Washington, DC, (revised 1996). The Silent Garden provides the reader with important background information about deafness, describes various communication options, and provides case studies and interviews with parents.
