BC Early Hearing Program
The BC Early Hearing Program (BCEHP) is the first province-wide screening program to check hearing in babies born in British Columbia. The program was announced in March 2005 and is currently under development, and is to be delivered by approximately 200 service providers and professionals in BC’s six health authorities.

This website is user-friendly and provides current information and support to parents.
Hands and Voices
Hands & Voices is an excellent, non-profit organization dedicated to providing unbiased
information and support to families who have deaf and hard of hearing children and to
the professionals working with these families. You can sign up for their newsletter called
"The Communicator."
Beginnings for Parents of Children Who Are Deaf or Hard of Hearing
This non-profit organization says their mission is to "help parents be informed,
empowered and supported as they make decisions about their child." Beginnings does
not promote any particular communication approach. This site provides some basic
information on topics such as early intervention and Individualized Family Service
Plans.
Alexander Graham Bell Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (AG Bell)
This non-profit association promotes oral communication and oral education of deaf and
hard of hearing individuals. Members can order the magazine "Voices" which publishes
articles related to oral deafness.
John Tracy Clinic
This organization provides free correspondence courses for parents of children with a
hearing loss. Three-week summer sessions for children who are deaf and hard of hearing
ages 2 through 5 years old and their families are also offered each summer at the Los
Angeles campus. John Tracy Clinic focuses on the development of spoken language.
National Deaf Education Centre - Gallaudet University
The Laurent Clerc National Deaf Education Centre (Clerc Centre) at Gallaudet
University has two demonstration schools for deaf students and works in collaboration
with other professionals to conduct research in the area of deafness and provide training
throughout the United States. This site provides lists of resources, organizations and
website links related to deafness.
Canadian Hard of Hearing Association
The Canadian Hard of Hearing Association (CHHA) is an organization that is run by
and for hard of hearing individuals. CHHA publishes an excellent magazine called
"Listen/Écoute." Highlights of current and past issues of "Listen/Ecoute" are available
on their website.
Canadian Hard of Hearing Association – BC Parents' Branch
CHHA - BC Parents' Branch is a province wide network of parents, families and friends
of hard of hearing children. They organize annual conferences and publish a newsletter
that is full of useful information for parents. Current and past issues of their newsletter
are available on their website.
Family Network for Deaf Children- BC
This is a British Columbia organization for families with deaf and hard of hearing
children who use sign language as their primary language. They provide information and
support to parents through workshops, videos, and an informative newsletter that is
available on their website.
Canadian Association of the Deaf
This is the national consumer organization of Deaf Canadian citizens who use sign
language as their primary language. Current and past issues of their newsletter,
"CADChat" is available on their website.
American Society for Deaf Children
ASDC is a U.S. non-profit organization that provides support and information to families
raising children who are deaf or hard of hearing. One of their primary focuses is to
promote meaningful and full communication access, particularly through the competent
use of sign language, in children's homes, schools and communities. This website has an
extensive list of links related to deafness as well as a section called "Snapshots" which
provides handouts on a range of topics of interest to parents.
Hearing Loss Association of America
Formerly called Self-Help for Hard of Hearing People (SHHH), the Hearing Loss
Association of America is an organization in the United States for people with hearing
loss. They publish a bimonthly magazine, "Hearing Loss". This organization also has a
division that is focused on people who use cochlear implants.
Ski-Hi
The Ski-Hi Institute has developed many good materials for service providers and
families with children who have a hearing loss.
Raising Deaf Kids - Children's Hosp. of Philadelphia
This website has a comprehensive list of links related to hearing loss.
Auditory-Verbal International
Auditory-Verbal International, Inc® is a private, non-profit organization whose
principal objective is to promote listening and speaking for children who are deaf or
hard of hearing. This website has a parents' page where parents can post their personal
webpage information; however parent webpages are only accepted on this site if they
promote the auditory-verbal approach.
National Cued Speech Organization
The National Cued Speech Association is a non-profit organization that promotes the
effective use of Cued Speech. Cued Speech is a sound based visual communication system
that uses handshapes and mouth movements to make the sounds of spoken language look
different.
CDC - Early Hearing Detection and Intervention
This site provides links to up-to-date research related to infant hearing loss.
American Sign Language Browser
This Michigan State University website contains an online browser that allows you to
look up videos demonstrating thousands of American Sign Language Signs.
Listen-Up
This site was started by the mother of a child with a profound hearing loss. Although this
website sells books and therapy materials for parents, it also has free helpful
information, a list-service to help connect parents, as well as extensive links to other
helpful websites.
Vancouver Oral Centre for Deaf Children
The Vancouver Oral Centre for Deaf Children (VOC) is certified by the Province of B.C. as an independent special needs school, pre-school and daycare providing a family centered approach to oral deaf education for deaf and hard-of-hearing children from infancy to early primary years. Our itinerant teachers also provide services to children and youth in independent schools across Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley. Provincially we provide consultation, direct service, and family support.
