Hearing & Amplification
Many parents report that understanding their child’s hearing loss is one of the most important things they learn after the diagnosis. Information specific to your own child’s hearing loss plays a role in your child’s early intervention. Parents regularly ask:
- What caused the hearing loss?
- What kind of hearing loss is it?
- What can my child hear?
- What impact does hearing loss have on my child’s development?
- Can we wait to get hearing aids?
- How do hearing aids work? What can and can’t hearing aids do?
- What does my child hear with hearing aids?
- What is the best hearing equipment for my child?
- How do I help my child learn to hear and listen to sounds?
Simulations of various degrees and types of hearing loss are available to help those without hearing loss experience what it may be like listening with a hearing loss. Parents discover what their own child’s experiences may be like by observing closely, working together with the audiologist and early interventionist, and using strategies that develop and support attention and listening skills.
