My Child Has a Hearing Loss

Helping to Repair Conversation Breakdowns

When adults take the time to repair a conversation with a child, they can keep communication going far longer. Beyond this, they’re also demonstrating ways for a child to repair conversations with other partners. Here are a few ideas for “repairs” that might can the conversation moving again:

  • Be sure you have your child’s attention before trying to communicate
  • Position yourself so that you and your child can see each other
  • Be sure your child can hear you as well as possible (e.g. hearing equipment is on and working)
  • Make sure the language you are using is not too complex for your child’s current level of development
  • Rephrase,-try to use other words, phrases, or signs that your child might know
  • Add words, signs, actions, or gestures to clarify what you are saying
