About Us
Letter from our Director
Welcome!
Who we are:
The BC Family Hearing Resource Centre is a welcoming place for all families with babies and young children with hearing loss. Since 1982 we have created a warm and friendly learning environment that many families call ‘home’.
Our staff is highly qualified, experienced and dedicated. We work in partnership with families to provide quality programming appropriate for each individual child and family. We are acknowledged leaders in the field of early intervention for young deaf and hard of hearing children. Our book, My Turn to Learn: An Up to Date Guide for Parents of Babies and Young Children with Hearing Loss, is used world wide by parents and professionals-in- training.
Our state-of-the-art world class facility reflects our commitment to accessibility for deaf and hard of hearing people, and the technology that makes this possible.
Is your baby or child too young to start services? Should you wait? NO!
Recent research has proven that early intervention for children with hearing loss results in significantly better speech and language development. For this reason, even if your baby is just a few months old we urge you to begin services now.
A common parental concern-selecting the “right” program and approach for your child:
Families with young deaf and hard of hearing children face many difficult choices and decisions. The first choice most parents face is selecting an early intervention/educational program for their child and family. Many parents also need to make decisions about communication methods and hearing aids or cochlear implants. Parents often report they are very anxious about making what appear to be “critical, life-long decisions for their children. Some parents say they find it confusing when they are faced with conflicting opinions about a variety of relevant issues.
Please keep in mind that the decisions you make about communication methods and early intervention programs are not irreversible. No one single approach or method has been scientifically proven to be best for all deaf or hard of hearing children. No doctor or hearing/speech professional has a crystal ball that can predict which therapy or educational approach will be most successful with a particular child. Working together with you, we will discover what works best for your child and family. Through ongoing assessments, we will help you closely monitor your child’s progress and together we will make changes to your individualized family service plan so that we can optimize your child’s progress. We will also continue to review with you the various options for approaches and services available at our centre as well as through programs elsewhere.
Parent Information Package:
This Parent Information Package will introduce you to the variety of programs and services we offer at our centre. We welcome your questions and comments. We want you to know we are here to support you.
Mission Statement:
“We strive to help every child reach their fullest potential. We provide family-centered services beginning as early in the child’s life as possible and are committed to individual choices. We offer support and resources throughout BC to deaf and hard of hearing children, their families and community service providers.”
Hearty congratulations are due to Staff and the Board of Directors on a very successful CARF survey! On March 27 and 28 we welcomed two surveyors from CARF, our accrediting body, to tour our building and meet with families, staff, and members of the Board.
Every three years CARF visitors are invited to review our programs and provide feedback on the work we do. This year, as always, we worked hard to prepare for them by updating policy, spiffing up paperwork, shining table tops, and presenting our very best selves to our surveyors.
The survey was a great success. Our visitors were gracious in their praise for our staff and their good work. They commented in particular on the exemplary work we have accomplished in creating our beautiful building and in publishing My Turn to Learn in five of the languages used by our families.
Heartfelt thanks to all staff and members of the Board who worked so hard.
And Hooray for us!
